What is Autism?

A neurodevelopmental disorder typically manifesting before the age of three, autism disrupts the typical progression of neurodevelopment in brain regions associated with social interaction, communication skills, and overall cognitive functioning. Individuals with autism commonly exhibit delays in communication, both verbal and non-verbal, as well as atypical play and leisure skills, along with challenges in social interactions. The overall adaptive functioning in those with autism is notably delayed.

Recent statistics from the National Autism Association reveal that autism now affects 1 in 44 children, with males being four times more susceptible than females. As a spectrum disorder, autism presents a wide range of variations among those affected, making each individual unique—no two people with autism are alike.

Treatment

Receiving an autism diagnosis can be overwhelming, but it's crucial to recognize the uniqueness of each individual's situation. Our treatment approach, ABA therapy (applied behavior analysis), systematically applies the principles of learning theory to modify behaviors. We aim to increase adaptive skills and replacement behaviors while strategically intervening to reduce maladaptive behaviors. A vital aspect of our treatment plan involves understanding how behavior functions, how the environment influences behavior, and how learning occurs—essential elements in crafting a behavior-modifying treatment plan.

Our comprehensive plans focus on enhancing language abilities, developing communication skills, improving attention, nurturing social skills, and reducing problematic behaviors. Our dedicated team is committed to helping clients improve their quality of life by delivering the highest standard of care.
